ANTARCTICA: RX-Tech Mines

[Note about the mutants and guys in white uniform - You will encounter some mutants in this level, who throw a poisonous gas. When they hit you, your health bar turns green. To be healed, you need to take a Medi Pack (the Small one is enough). For the PC version, the Crystal works fine. Be careful, though, as they can still poison you even when they are dying and Lara stops aiming at them. Before they drop dead, they can still blow their poison breath at Lara. You will also meet some guys in white uniform. If you are nice to them, they will not hurt you. In fact, they will do the hard job for you and kill the mutants. So, the statistics about the kills above may vary.]

Turn right and climb into the crawlspace. Crawl forwards until you can stand. Here you can see a door on your right. This is a square hallway and if you keep moving around opening the doors as you go, you will not be able to get out. The deal is to open a door and reveal a crawlspace behind it.

Getting out of the square hallway - For now, follow the hallway as it goes to the left. You will hear a door closing. Keep going and the next door will open as you approach. Go through it and follow the hallway as it goes to the left. Again, the next door opens as you approach. Keep going. Just before the corner you will hear a door opening. This is the first door you saw at the beginning. Keep going to the left around the corner through a corridor without doors. When you turn around the next corner, you are back at the beginning. Keep going. Just before the next corner, you will hear a door closing. Stop here and turn around. Follow the hallway in an opposite direction, pass the door on your right and go through the hallway that has no doors. The next door you see is the one you just closed and it has revealed a crawlspace on the left.

Crawl through the opening you just revealed. At the end, turn around and climb down the ladder. Pick up the MP5 Clips and push the button to open the nearby door. If you take a look through the grates, you will see two mutants. If you wait for a bit, you will see a guy in white throwing flames and killing the mutants. Climb in the opening and drop down at the end. Follow the snowy tunnel to get inside the mines.

Central mine area - You need a Crowbar to open the door on the left hand side. For now let's clear the area from the mutants around. Go to the left towards the closed door and then to the right crossing the tracks. You can see a mutant below to the left - take care of him. Return back where you entered this area and follow the tracks that go upwards. Press the button at the entrance of the control room to turn on the lights. Enter cautiously. Head to the left and turn around to kill a mutant that is lurking on the other side (there is no reason to enter the control room, unless you are interested in all kills).

1st Secret - From the entrance of the control room, climb to its roof and head to the other side and a bit to the right, where the ceiling is higher. Turn around and crawl backwards, pressing Action to grab the edge. Shimmy a bit to the right to find the ladder and climb down until Lara's feet are at the bottom of the ladder. Press Jump and Roll to back-flip and twist in midair. Keep pressing Action to grab the edge of the crawlspace below. Pull into and pick up the Small Medi Pack and the Grenades. The door here leads to the 2nd Secret, but the button that opens this door is elsewhere. Crawl back out and drop down.

Now you can get the mine cars and explore the rest of the level. The upper mine car must be done lastly, because you need to get the pick-ups from the other two. The middle and lower mine cars can be done in any order. Since we are at the bottom of the mine, we will get the lower car and move upwards.

[Controlling the mine car - To get into the car, stand next to it and press Action. When you get it, Lara grabs a wrench from the car and she holds it with her right hand. This wrench will help you hit the lamp switches (by pressing Action) that change the direction of the tracks. In various points, you will see horizontal metal girders and you need to crouch to avoid hitting on them. The car moves forwards by itself. You cannot move backwards, but you can break by pressing the Jump button. To dismount, press the Roll button along with the right or left direction key.]

Lower mine car - Get in the car and it will start moving forwards. Crouch to avoid the two horizontal girders and immediately stand and press Action to use the wrench and hit the lamp switch. This will change the track's direction you will be led to the left (if you move forwards, you will hit on the wall and crash). Again crouch to avoid the next horizontal girder and do not break because you need to jump over the gap. Crouch to avoid the next two girders and the car will stop by itself. Dismount on the right hand side.

Jump to the other side to get the Crystal and jump back where you left the car. Enter the dark tunnel and push the button to open the door. Follow the hallway to the end and slide down the ramp to a room with steam coming from the floor. There is a fence on the right and you will go to the other side in a while. Draw weapons and head to the left. A big mutant attacks from the opening on the right hand side. Use a powerful weapon and kill it. Then go through the opening it came from. Notice the crawlspace on your right as you go? Crawl through it to reach the area below the steam room and get the Shotgun Shells and the Rocket from the right. You may hear a roaring. It is another big mutant that is waiting for you outside. You can attract its attention by crawling outside a bit and then crawl backwards and shoot him from the crawlspace. Once you are done, follow the other side of the hallway to reach the area behind the fence.

Climb up the ladder to the top and dismount on the right. The first button opens the door that leads you back to the mine car. Do not return back now. Press the second button to open the other door and go through it. Crawl through the opening and drop down at the end. Head to other side of the room and a big mutant will open the door from outside. Kill it and pick up the Small Medi Pack and the Uzi Clips it drops (!!). There are some Desert Eagle Clips in the far left corner. Get them and go outside.

Jump into the pool and get the Winch Starter from the bottom. Climb out of the water and onto the low ledge opposite the crane, warm up and jump into the water again to get the Desert Eagle Clips and the Flares from the alcove beneath the crane. You can take a standing jump towards the crane. Lara will hit on the rope, but this will make her enter the alcove easier. Roll, swim forwards and climb out of the water.

Go inside the room and press the button on the left hand side, close to the crawlspace you came from. Immediately jump backwards and draw your weapons, as a big mutant attacks from inside. Kill it and go through the door. Push the button to open the nearby door that leads you back to the ladder you climbed up before. Jump over the gap and go through the door on the left hand side to reach the area where you left the mine car.

(Note - Having the tunnel to the back of you, there is a ladder that you can climb down in the far right. You cannot go anywhere from there because of the steep tracks. This ladder is there in case you accidentally slide down the tracks on the right hand side.)

Get in the car again. Crouch to avoid the girder and immediately break to avoid crashing on the turn. Crouch under the next girder and hit the lamp switch to change the track's direction and move forwards. You end up in the Central mine area, getting a Crystal on your way. If you do not hit the lamp button, you will continue to the left. You will end up in the Central mine area, but you will miss the Crystal.

Back in the Central mine area - Dismount and go up the tracks to reach the middle mine car.

Middle mine car - Get in the car and do not break in the first downslope because you need a good run up in order to jump over the gap. Break to avoid crashing on the turn before the bridge. After the bridge, break a bit but not entirely because you need a run up for the next gap around the corner. Hit the lamp switch to block the tracks and stop at the platform (if you proceed and manage to clear the gaps, you will end up back to the Central mine area). Dismount and let the guy in white kill the mutant. Get the Crystal and go through the opening.

(Note about the Crystal - The PC players may not need to get the Crystal now. If they managed to get the Crystal as they were exiting the lower mine car by hitting the lamp switch, their health should be well now. They can leave the Crystal for later.)

To get past the drills, run through them as they move away or step on the ledge and crouch beneath them. Go to the other side where the snow bank is and take a standing jump over the slide. Crawl through the opening and drop down in the hole to the right. Get the Flares and crawl back out. Follow the opposite passage until you reach a slope. Slide backwards, pressing Action to grab the edge. Shimmy to the very left and drop to the raised corner of the ledge below. Be careful of the shaft ahead. There is a big mutant in the dark tunnel behind. Avoid it if you are not interested in all kills, because there is nothing to pick up.

Carefully drop to the snowy ledge below and head to the left (if you face the dark tunnel). Jump to the slope, grab the edge and drop to the ledge below. The opening on the left leads to a mutant nest with a fellow inside. Avoid it because there is nothing to pick up (if you want, crawl to the end and kill the mutant from above). Grab the opening and shimmy to the left. Release and grab the crevice below. Shimmy to the right and drop to the block. A mutant is lurking on the ground, so kill him from here if you want (although there is nothing down there). Get rid of him though, because he may poison you. Grab the crevice above, shimmy to the left and pull up. Crawl forwards and quickly kill the mutant that appears from around the corner.

[Note - You do not have much time to kill the last mutant with the Pistols. If you are not willing to spend precious ammo from a powerful weapon, try this: crawl to trigger the mutant and immediately crawl backwards before it reaches you. Drop to the ground below and climb on the block to the right. The mutant will try to follow you from above inside the crevice and it will get stuck in the corner above the block. Now grab the crevice and pull up at the end. You can either kill the mutant (although Lara cannot aim at it and you need to do it manually) or totally ignore it.]

Area with pool and snow banks - In the next area, you can see a guy in white on his try to kill a mutant. For your information, two more mutants appear when you explore the right hand side of the area. You may need to take care of them by yourself, but be careful of their poisonous gas. If one of the mutants hits you and you do not have a close saved game to load, wait until you kill the second one. Then, you can get a Medi Pack. Locate the alcove at the bottom of the pool. Stand opposite the alcove and take a running jump into the pool to enter the alcove. Get the Rocket, roll, swim forwards and climb out on the ledge you jumped from. Then climb on the walkway above the pool and pick up the Crowbar. Drop back down.

Opening the door for the 2nd Secret - If you are interested in getting the 2nd Secret, you need to do something now. You may have already noticed the small opening in the wall. If not, it is on the right hand side, as you enter this area. Facing the opening, locate the snowy small slope to the right (it is on the ground, attached to the wall, as shown in this screenshot). Stand on it and from the left side press Action and the up direction key to grab the crevice above. Do not jump up to grab the crevice. Lara denies grabbing it that way. Simply press Action and Up. What crevice? No, there is not a visible crevice. Shimmy to the left and pull into the opening. Crawl forwards and push the button to open a door back in the small room where you got the 1st Secret. Crawl back out.

The exit is exactly opposite the entrance. It is high though to reach it from the ground, so you need to use the snow banks. Go towards the entrance and climb on the bank on the right (if the entrance is to your back). The following sequence of jumps is shown in this page. Walk to the front left corner and take a running jump to the next bank without pressing Action. The next bank is a bit to the right. You need to take a running jump from the corner that points the next bank. Be careful though as you cannot hop backwards because you will slide down. So, you need to turn in midair and either grab and pull up, or land directly on it. Now head to the end of the bank and walk to the very front corner. You need to take a running jump and land directly on the last bank, because Lara denies grabbing it. Again, you cannot hop backwards, so you need to turn in midair.

Enter the alcove and climb up the ladder. To get past the four drills, just crawl beneath them. Go around the machine and climb up the ladder. Carefully pass the next two machines and climb up the several blocks. Be careful when you reach the ladder, because there is a mutant on the upper block to the right. To kill it, stand on the previous block (below the metal support) and shoot it from a diagonal range. Once you kill it, climb on the block and safely drop to the tracks. Follow them to reach the area where you left the mine car (get the Crystal if you did not do it before).

Get the car and do not break on the downslope because there is a gap you need to jump over. Once you do it, immediately break to avoid crashing on the turn. Hit the lamp switch to change the track's direction and move to the right (if you miss the switch, you will crash ahead). Do not break on the next downslope - there is a gap ahead. Crouch beneath the three girders and break a bit on the next turn. You finally end up back in the Central mine area.

Back in the Central mine area - Before getting the upper mine car, use the Crowbar to break the padlock and open the door, close where you entered this area. Inside you will find the Lead Acid Battery.

2nd Secret - If you have followed this walkthrough, you have already opened the door that leads to the Secret. Climb on the control room and reach the small room where you got the 1st Secret (see above on how you can get there). Go through the door and drop down. Wait for a bit and a mutant will show up from behind the snow bank on the left hand side. Kill it and head to the left where you will find a Crystal and some Desert Eagle and MP5 Clips. Return back and crawl back out.

(Note - In order to continue with the Upper mine car, you need to have the Winch Starter from the Lower mine area and the Lead Acid Battery after using the Crowbar to the door close where you entered the Central mine area. The Crowbar is in the Middle mine area.)

Upper mine car - Get into the car and after riding upwards, do not break at all (even on the turn) because you need a good run up for the gap. Crouch beneath the girder and the two grills and you will finally reach an area where the door behind you closes and the car will stop. Dismount on the left.

Turn around and get the Flares from the right hand corner (take a standing jump over the slide which is in front of the tracks). Go to the winch and place the Battery on its side, by standing on the lower ledge. Go to the backside of the winch (to the top) and use the Winch Starter. A small yellow sub lowers.

Now the tough part is about to start. You need to take a long swim in order to exit and there are some places where you can warm up and get some Medi Packs that you may need. As it was mentioned at the beginning of the Antarctica level, if in some points the swim is long enough (like now) and you cannot make it, save your game in a different slot whilst the hypothermia bar is about halfway through and load this save to restore your warmth. Just make sure you save in a different slot, in case something goes wrong.

Stand on the ledge where you placed the Battery and having the winch on your left, locate the light on the wall below. There is a tunnel to the right of the light that leads to a ledge where you can climb out. Jump into the water and swim through the tunnel. The ledge is on the right hand side. Climb out and warm up.

The next spot is to get inside the sub. So jump into the water and swim downwards, then beneath the sub where you can climb out. Here you will find a Large Medi Pack.

Stand above the opening having the place you got the Medi Pack on your left. Take a look through the opening and notice the two lights on the wall below. There is a tunnel between these two lights. Jump into the water and swim through the tunnel that turns right. Turn again right and climb on the ledge where you can warm up and get a Large Medi Pack. Jump into the water and now swim upwards through the long tunnel. You get a Crystal on your way and finally reach a ledge where you can climb out. Do that and pick up the Small Medi Pack. Climb on the ledge to the right to reach an excavation area.

Excavation area - Follow the passage and climb on the ledge. There is a guy in white on the right and a mutant in the alcove just above the entrance. Unless you are interested in all kills, do not bother with it, because there is nothing inside. Cross the bridge and head to the right having your weapons drawn, as a mutant is lurking there.

3rd Secret - Walk to the edge of the shaft, close where you killed the mutant. There is a slope next to the wall that leads to a cave below (as shown in this screenshot). Jump on the slope, grab the edge and drop down. Enter the cave and pick up the Large Medi Pack, the Desert Eagle Clips and the Grenades. Make your way back to the entrance of the cave.

To return back up, take a running jump to the ledge on the left and another running jump to the triangular ledge on the opposite wall. Take another running jump to the flat ledge on the opposite wall and yet another running jump to the next opposite ledge. Climb on the block above and pick up the Grenades. Facing the shaft, the next ledge is to the right below, beneath the bridge. Take a running jump there and climb on the block above. Turn around and jump up to grab the bridge. Pull up.

A mutant is waiting for you to the right of the bridge. Kill it or ignore it. Stand on the block in front of the bridge and jump at the top of the metal building. Go to the back, where you will find a Small Medi Pack. Drop down, push the button to open the door and turn on the alarm. Go inside to end the level.
