Level 8: Wreck of the Maria Doria
Follow the passage to reach an opening in the floor above a flooded room. A scuba diver is lurking in the water, so jump into and harpoon him. Or, jump in the water to lure him, then climb back out from the trapdoor. If you are lucky, he will surface in the small hole of water, and you can kill him easily with a powerful weapon. Get the two sets of Harpoons from the bottom (or the Harpoon Gun instead of one of the two sets if you do not have it) and swim through the opening. Climb out of the water and pick up the Large Medi Pack. What follows is a long drop down which will take almost 70% of your health, so make sure you have enough of it. Turn around, drop backwards to grab the edge and release to drop on the decrepit floor. Lara will fall through it and land to the ground. (Note - At this point you can take a shortcut. It requires quite a few Medi Packs and be aware that you will lose many pick-ups, kills and the first two Secrets. If you are interested in seeing that, check the note about the Shortcut at the bottom of the page.) Inside the ship – As you can see, the ship is upside down. Ignore the pool in the corner for now and head to the other side of the room. A thug and a baddie emerge from the next room, so kill them and take their two Small Medi Packs and Automatic Pistol Clips (or a pair of Automatic Pistols if you do not have them). 1st Secret – Enter the room the two guys came from and notice the overturned furniture in the bottom left corner (as shown in this screenshot). Go behind them (jump over them if necessary) and climb through the opening in the ceiling. Follow the dark passage around to the right, killing a thug on your way. When you reach the end, turn around and wait for another thug to appear. Kill him and drop through the opening. Pick up the Silver Dragon and make your way back to the room with the overturned furniture the same way you came. There are three movable blocks here that you have to re-arrange in order to reveal two passages. The following procedure is shown in this image. The first movable block in already out and you need to move it into the alcove on the left hand side. Pull\ push it once, then push it twice into the alcove. There are two more movable blocks in the corner. As you face them, pull the left block once and follow the same procedure to place it into the alcove and next to the first block. You just revealed an opening that leads to the Rest Room. Now pull the last movable block twice to reveal another opening that leads to the Ballroom. Ballroom – First go through the opening behind the last block that leads to the Ballroom. When you drop down, a baddie comes from the passage you came from and one more baddie and a thug from inside the Ballroom. You can drop down backwards and quickly deal with the first baddie taking some steps backwards, then turn right and wait for the other two. Once you are done, pick up the Large Medi Pack and the Flares the last two guys dropped. Enter the Ballroom, avoiding the left hand part with the sharp glasses on the floor. There is a bad guy on the balcony that you can kill now if you want. Head to the bottom right corner (if the entrance is to your back) and go through the opening. Carefully walk through the sharp glasses and turn around. Drop backwards to hang from the edge and release to grab the ledge below. Pull into the passage and pick up the Rest Room Key. Walk up to the edge of the passage and take a standing jump to grab the opposite edge. Pull up, carefully walk through the sharp glasses and make your way back where the movable blocks are. Rest Room – Enter the Rest Room and go to the far right. Use the Key you just got to open the nearby door. Push the button there to open the glass doors at the other side of the room (behind you) and release a baddie. Kill him and push the button behind the glass doors to open another door back in the Ballroom. Notice the Circuit Breaker behind the door on the left. Before leaving, push the first button again to close the glass doors. This will prevent you from backtracking later in order to get the Circuit Breaker. Back to the Ballroom – Return to the Ballroom and go to the far right. Notice the two angled ledges there. Use the one which is beneath the balcony's corner and whilst standing at the higher part, jump up to grab the balcony (as shown here). Pull up and go to the left around the corner. Hang from the balcony and shimmy to the left. Do not pull up for the open door. Instead, keep shimming until you reach the other side of the balcony past the second column (see this screenshot to get oriented). Pull up and pick up the Automatic Pistol Clips from the guy you killed earlier. Go around the balcony where the broken railings are and take a running jump to grab the opposite side (above the sharp glasses). Pull up and pick up the Circuit Breaker #1. Hallway with five doors and siderooms – Make your way to the part of the balcony with the open door. Now you can climb through it. You reach a hallway with five doors. The first door on the right needs a Key to open. The one on the left opens by turning the valve, but it leads to an empty room. So, do not bother with it, unless you want to see everything. Open the second door on the right by turning the valve and drop into the room below. There is a movable block in the alcove on the right and you need to position it beneath the switch. Pull it twice and jump\ climb on the block, then drop down to the other side (to the back of the block, which means you have to stand into the alcove). Push it to the end, into the corner. Pull it once having the switch to your back and then push it beneath the switch. Climb on the block and use the switch to open the door above. Pull the movable block that is in the wall, climb on it and then through the door. Follow the passage to reach an empty room with a closed door on the left hand wall (this door is one of the five doors in the hallway and you will never open it). Go through the passage at the other side. A baddie climbs from the room below, so take care of him. Drop down and pull\ push the movable block to position it beneath the switch at the far left. Pick up the Rusty Key from where the block initially was and use the switch to open the door that leads you back to the hallway with the five doors. Use the Key to open the remaining door. Safely drop into the room below. Push\ pull the movable block from the corner to the front side of the ledge (that way, you extend the ledge - as shown here). Climb on the ledge and pull the second block twice. Go behind it and push yet another block to reveal a passage. Go through it and drop into the next room. You can see the decrepit floor in the next hallway. If you fall through it, you will land on the four burners below. Do not rush to run over it because four barrels will roll from the right side. The first two barrels roll down when you pass from the right hand side of the decrepit floor. The other two when you pass from the left side. To easily pass this trap, stand on the right side, move forward to make the two barrels roll down and immediately hop back to avoid falling down. Stay on the right and take a running jump over the remaining decrepit floor. The other two barrels at the top of the ramp will not roll, as long as you avoid the left part of the decrepit floor. 2nd Secret – The opening at the top of the ramp leads to a dark passage. Jump up to grab the edge and pull up. Immediately drop backwards because two barrels roll through the passage. Stay beneath the opening and the barrels will pass over Lara's head without causing her injury. Climb into the passage again and pick up the Jade Dragon at the end. Drop back down. Area with pool and wooden platform – Go to the opposite side of the decrepit floor. You can kill the thug from below. Do it and climb into the room. Here you can see an opening in the floor, another one in the wall and a closed door. Drop through the opening in the floor to land on the wooden platform below. Jump into the water and locate the underwater lever on the wall, to the right of the ladder (as shown here). This opens a door above and it is timed. You have 30 seconds to make it, which is more than enough, so do not panic missing precious seconds. So, climb on the platform, then on the ledge above. Climb through the door you opened that closes behind you. It opens though with the switch you find here. When you pass through the other open door, it closes behind you as well, but you will open it in a while. Walk to the edge of the ramp. The trapdoor at the bottom opens when you pass above it and closes after a few seconds. You do not want to fall through it, because there are sharp glasses below. The deal is to reach the opening in the left hand wall . You can ignore the trapdoor and take a running jump directly to the opening. If you prefer the fan part, do either: • Slide forwards and jump over the trapdoor to land on the slope ahead. Keep pressing the Jump button to jump back and forth until the trapdoor closes. • Slide down backwards pressing Action to grab the edge as the trapdoor opens. Wait for the trapdoor to close and pull up. Lara magically passes through the closed trapdoor! Once you reach the opening, the door opens. Use the switch to open a door elsewhere. Drop back down and take a standing jump over the slide to return back to the grating floor above the wooden platform. Climb through the other opening and follow the passage to reach the door you just opened. Room with timed trapdoors and glasses at the bottom - Do not rush to drop to the balcony below, because a baddie is patrolling around. Kill him from here and then drop down. Two thugs are waiting on the lower balcony, so take care of them now (you may need to move around the perimeter of the balcony). The button on the left (if the entrance is to your back) opens a trapdoor at the other side of the balcony (see this screenshot to get oriented). You have 25 seconds to run\ jump around the perimeter and jump\ fall through the trapdoor before it closes. If you cannot make it, you can approach the closed trapdoor and stand in front of the slope. Turn to the left and towards the trapdoor (a bit more than 45 degrees) and take a standing jump pressing Action to land on the balcony below. (This screenshot shows Lara's correct starting position.) When you approach the Circuit Breaker #2, another trapdoor opens on the opposite side, which allows you to get back to the balcony above. It is timed, but ignore it for now. Pick up the Small Medi Pack from one of the thugs and push the button to drain the room where the wooden platform is. Approach the corner where the Breaker was to open the trapdoor and run\ jump to it and pull up. Return to the grating floor above the wooden platform and carefully drop down. Use the wheel to open the door, go up the ramp and climb to the ledge above. For now, ingore the passage on the left. Continue ahead and drop into the room which is behind the glass doors of the Rest Room. Pick up the Circuit Breaker #3 at the end. (Note - You cannot get the Breaker if you did not close the glass doors before. In that case, read the next paragraph which describes how you can get back to the Rest Room. Once there, use the button opposite the doors to close them.) The button exactly opposite the doors is the one you used before. Now use the other button (close to the way you came) to open two trapdoors: the one gets you back to the Rest Room and the other to the area where the first Breaker is in case you have missed it. Climb through the opening you came from and go up the ramp on the right. The passage with the blue tiles ahead leads to the trapdoor of the first Breaker. Go the right, but before dropping into the Rest Room, be alerted of a baddie and a thug. Kill them both and collect their two sets of Harpoons and Uzi Clips (or a pair of Uzis if you do not have them). Once you have the 3 Breakers – Exit to the room where the movable blocks are and return to the room where you first dropped into the ship (the long drop down). Jump into the pool in the far right corner and get the Small Medi Pack. Swim through the twisted passage, keeping an eye on the wall to spot a lever that opens the trapdoor at the end of the passage. When you surface, two thugs above shoot at you. Climb out of the water and take care of them along with their friend. If you stay close to the trapdoor, you can easily kill them without taking much damage. Once you are done, pick up their Large Medi Pack, Uzi Clips and two Shotgun Shells (or the Shotgun instead of one of the Shells if you do not have it). Place the three Circuit Breakers to turn off the burners and pull the movable block three times to position it beneath the opening. Climb on the block, then into the opening. Kill the baddie there and throw the switch to flood a room elsewhere. Return to the edge of the opening and take a running jump to the first duct. The switch you just used also makes the ducts accessible so that you can jump on them. If you slide when you jump on the first duct, it means you have used the switch twice. Use it again. Its proper position is down. Take a running jump to grab each of the next ducts and a standing jump to land in the opening at the other side of the room. Flooded part of the ship – Jump into the water below and swim through the tunnel until you can surface. Climb on the wooden platform and approach the water on the other side. Draw weapons and step in the water. A barracuda appears from the right side, so take care of it. Go to the right making a U turn to find two sets of Harpoons in an alcove. Then go to the left making again a U turn to climb out of the water and in front of a door. Draw your weapons, as baddie will turn around the corner. When he shows up, shoot him and drop backwards into the water where he will not follow you. Climb out of the water again and shoot him once more to finish him. Pick up his Small Medi Pack. Follow the passage to find yourself in front of a pit. Go to the left (the windows of the nearby room should be on your left) and turn left to find two sets of Automatic Pistol Clips. Opposite the pit, you will find a door that opens by turning its wheel. Inside you will find a switch that opens another door, which is timed. It is on a slow timer, so there is no reason to panic. Exit and continue ahead. The door you just opened is exactly opposite, beyond the pit. Once inside, pick up the Flares and push the movable block to reveal a switch that opens a trapdoor, which leads into the sea. Exit the room and go towards the door with the wheel (if you approach the windows that overlook the ocean, you will see what you are looking for). Go to the left to find the trapdoor you just opened. Jump into the water. Two sharks and three barracudas are waiting for you. You can harpoon them or totally avoid them. Swim having the ship on your right. When you reach the open area, turn right and you will see the windows of the ship. Opposite the windows and behind the rocks, you will find the Cabin Key. To return back, swim having the ship on your left. Turn left from where you came and keep swimming until you can surface. 3rd Secret – Swim back down and, as before, swim having the ship on your right. When you reach the open area, do not turn right where the windows of the ship are. Instead, keep swimming forwards and towards an alcove. Search for an opening on the right above, behind a sloped rock (as shown in this screenshot). You can find a place to surface there. Climb out of the water and pick up the Gold Dragon (plus the Grenade Launcher and two pairs of Grenades as a reward for finding all the Secrets). Jump into the water and return back to the ship. Back into the ship - Go towards the pit and use the Key to open the door of the nearby cabin (the one with the windows). Inside the cabin, you will find a switch that opens a trapdoor next to the pit. Drop through that trapdoor and push the movable block beneath the switch. Climb on the block and use the switch to open a trapdoor in the cabin. Return to the cabin and climb through the trapdoor. Follow the passage and drop to the balcony below. There are two thugs on the lower ledge that you can kill from here. You may need though to move around the perimeter of the balcony. Once they are dead, drop through the opening in the floor to land on a flat ledge (the opening is on the right, assuming the entrance is to your back). The two thugs left a Small Medi Pack and M-16 Clips. The dark alcove contains three more sets of M-16 Clips (one of them will be the M-16 Gun if you do not have it). (Note - For a buggy reason, if you stay still into this alcove, the scuba divers from below will harpoon you. So, make sure you keep moving.) Two scuba divers are swimming around. You can either harpoon them or climb on one of the ledges where the sharp glasses are and kill them from there. Just make sure you press the Walk button if you want to move around. Once you are done, locate the single barrel in one of the corners at the bottom of the water. This "shows" you the way you need to go. There is a passage you need to follow behind the rocks. It goes left and then right. On your way, you will meet three lees that pop out from their cave and two barracudas. Deal with them or totally ignore them. Continue through the passage and swim forwards where an opening with a grating is. Approach it to end the level. Shortcut - Note that by taking this shortcut, you will miss the first two Secrets and several pick-ups and kills. You can try it, though, provided that you have enough Medi Packs stored in your inventory. By following this shortcut, you do not need to have the three Circuit Breakers. As soon as you start the level and slide down the ramp and fall through the breakable tiles to land on the floor below, do not head to the left, as you will trigger the thugs (although you can kill them if you want to). Instead, drop in the pool on the right. Follow the underwater tunnel and pull the lever. Swim forwards to emerge outside the room with the ducts. Get out of the water and take care of the thugs. On the right, you can see the movable crate, blocked by the three flames (you were supposed to find three Circuit Breakers, place them in the receptacles to turn off the flames so as to pull the crate safely beneath the opening on the wall). Now, here is the deal: give yourself a Medi Pack to restore your health to 100%, if necessary. Step on the leftmost square with the flame (the one that is nearest to the crate) and start pulling the crate. Lara will catch fire and immediately her health will start decreasing. Keep pulling the crate and when you see she is about to die, give her a Medi Pack. Since she is still on fire, her health will decrease again. Once more, when she is about to die, give her another Medi Pack. Keep pulling the crate and giving Lara Medi Packs until you have the crate located at the convenient spot (beneath the opening). Once you do this, immediately roll and run towards the small pool on the left (from where you first entered this room before). Give Lara another Medi Pack if you think her health will not be enough, and dive in the water. The flames that burn her will go off once she drops in the water, and she will be safe and sound again. Get out of the water and return to the room with the ducts. Climb on the crate and enter the opening. Throw the switch to rearrange the ducts and jump from the one to the other to reach the opening on the other side of the room.
