Level 9: Living Quarters
You begin the level underwater, so you need to find a place to surface before you drown Lara. Swim forward and as soon as you pass the archway, locate the lever around to the left (as shown in this screenshot). Pull it to open a trapdoor at the other side of the area (behind you as you pull the lever). If you swim further in the cavern before using the lever, a strong current will drag you towards the closed trapdoor. If this happens, roll underwater and swim against the current by pressing only the Swim (Jump) key, and adding the forward arrow from time to time. Lara will eventually approach the archway, so that you can pull the lever. Climb through the trapdoor and continue into the ship. A baddie appears, so take care of him and pick up his Small Medi Pack. The opening at the end leads to the engine. Into the engine – A thug starts shooting from the right above as soon as you enter. You can kill him now or ignore him and take care of him later (it is quite difficult to aim at him from below and you will lose a lot of health). Head to the left and climb on the metal ledges to get to the other side of the room. When you climb on the highest metal ledge, Lara will look up and locate a switch. Make a mental note of it, because you will get to it a bit later. Drop down and enter the passage. Follow it as it goes and drop down at the end. Draw your weapons and continue cautiously because two baddies will show up around the corner. Kill them and pick up their Harpoons and Automatic Pistol Clips (or the Harpoon Gun and a pair of Automatic Pistols if you do not have them). Room with burners and barrels – Continue to the left and jump over the barrels that rolls towards you. Or, make one step out in the passage to trigger the barrels and immediately hop back in the previous passage (where you killed the two baddies) to let the barrels roll. When all is over, jump over the now still barrels and get in the next room. Kill another guy here and notice the lever to the left of the entrance (as you face it). You cannot use it now, because it is high enough. Stand at the top of the ramp and take a running jump to grab the crevice above the burners. Shimmy to the right and drop down. Use the switch to turn off the burners. Climb into the opening and then into the next passage. Follow it to reach a small room with a switch and an opening in the floor. Use the switch to rearrange the pistons back to the engine of the ship. There is another opening in the ceiling, but the edge is high enough and you cannot reach it. Drop through the opening in the floor to return to the passage close to the engine. Make your way back there. Back to the engine – As you return back to the engine, climb on the metal ledge to the right (the one you came from). Turn left, walk up to the edge and take a standing jump to grab the first piston. Pull up and take another standing jump to grab the second piston; pull up. To land on the third piston, stand at the back of the second piston and take a standing jump. Take a standing jump to grab the fourth piston and pull up. Finally, jump to the doorway. If you did not kill the thug before, do it now and pick up his Automatic Pistol Clips. 1st Secret – Before going through the passage, turn right and take a running jump to grab the ledge with the Silver Dragon. Pull up and get the Dragon. Take a running jump to grab the ledge in front of the doorway and pull up. Go through the passage and follow it as it goes to reach a dead end. Do you remember the switch you used earlier and rearranged the pistons? You are currently above it. (The following sequence of pushing/ pulling the blocks is shown in this diagram) The "dead end" here is a movable block, so push it three times to position it into an alcove. As you push the block, you reveal an opening in the floor to the left. This leads you back to the switch that rearranges the pistons. Do not drop through it yet. Go around to the left and push the second movable block once to reveal a lower ledge that will help you climb through the opening later. If you want an extra pick-up, go back to the first movable block and pull it twice. Jump over the opening (if you accidentally fall down, you can climb back up) and go around the short passage to reach the alcove with the two Shotgun Shells (one of them will be the Shotgun if you do not have it). Now drop through the opening to get back to the switch that rearranges the pistons. Use it again (Lara will pull it up) to bring the pistons to their original position. Back to the engine (again) - Climb through the opening you came from (where the two movable blocks are) and turn around. Jump over the opening and follow the passage to return back to the engine. Take a running jump to the first piston and a standing jump to grab the second one; pull up. To land on the third piston, take a standing jump from the back of the second piston. Finally take a standing jump to grab the fourth piston and pull up. Turn right and take a running jump to grab the edge of the alcove. Pull up and use the switch to flood the room with the burners and barrels. Take a running jump back to the fourth piston and carefully drop to the ground. Back to the room with burners and barrels - Once again, follow the passage and drop into the water to reach the room with the burners and barrels. Now you can use the lever to the left of the entrance (as you face it) and open the door at the other side of the room. Swim through it and draw your Harpoon Gun because a scuba diver will soon join you. Take care of him and swim through the opening. If you need some air, search for another opening next to the one you came from (see here to get oriented). Swim towards the cave and notice the closed trapdoor among the leaves just before the entrance of the cave. Swim through the cave, sticking to the left hand wall, because an eel will pop out from the right hand side. Use the lever to open the trapdoor outside the cave, roll and swim to the right to get away from the eel. Swim through the trapdoor and climb out of the water. Room with blue ducts – A thug is patrolling on one of the ducts. Take a standing jump over one of the three slides to land on the grating walkway and kill the thug from here. On this walkway you can find a switch that opens the door at the other side. Go through it. [Note - If you cannot complete the following task (the timed metal ledges), you can take a shortcut here. Stand at the middle of the grating walkway, having the switch on your left and facing the opening you came from. The appropriate position is beneath the part of the duct that bends upwards. Walk to the edge of the walkway and take a standing jump to grab the corner of the duct above, as shown in this screenshot. Pull up and head to the right. Take a running jump to the doorway and skip the next two paragraphs.] Timed metal ledges – The two switches here raise two sets of metal ledges on the other side. They are timed, but they are slow, so there is no reason to be in such a hurry. As you face the switches, use the right hand one first. Start side-stepping to the left, even if the camera shows the ledges rise, pressing the Look button at the same time to break the camera. Use the second switch, press the Look button to break the camera and roll. Take a running jump to grab the ledge and shimmy to the right until you can pull into the alcove at the end. Use the switch to lower a platform in the previous room with the blue ducts. Drop to ground and use the sloped ledge at the other side to climb back up. Exit to the grating walkway. Drop to the left and head to the far left corner. Jump on the slide in the corner and keep pressing the Jump button to land on the slide behind. Again, keep pressing the Jump button along with Action to grab the ledge above (as shown in this screenshot). Pull up and turn around. Take a running jump to the blue duct and follow it to the end. Pull the movable block once, jump to the previous duct and jump to the ledge at the other side of the block (where it initially was). Drop backwards to grab the edge and shimmy to the left until you can pull up. Turn around and jump into the passage. Go to the end and slide down to the duct. Follow it to the right and take a running jump to the doorway. Follow the passage to reach the next room. A baddie comes from the hallway on the right, so take care of him. 2nd Secret – Go through the hallway our friend came from. Notice the Gold Dragon through the opening in the floor. You cannot drop down, because the sharp glasses will kill you. From the edge of the opening, take a standing jump to grab the ledge above. Pull up and notice the decrepit floor ahead. Step on it to make it fall apart and hop backwards. Hang from the edge and drop down. Pick up the Dragon and walk through the sharp glasses. Climb out of the pit and go through the hallway you came from. Go around to the right until you reach a ramp. Slide down the ramp and jump at the edge and over the decrepit floor with the sharp glasses below. Continue to the left and draw your weapons to aim at a barracuda in the pool. Take care of it. 3rd Secret – Notice the decrepit floor in the back right corner of the pool. Step on it to make it fall apart and climb out of the water. Another barracuda will show up, so take care of it. Swim through the opening you just revealed and get the Jade Dragon from the bottom of the water (plus four sets of M-16 Clips as a reward for finding all the Secrets). Return back to the ship. Continue to the other side of the ship, climbing out of the pool. There is a decrepit floor in a depression between the slides. If you are fast, you can jump on it and grab the crevice in the column before the floor collapses (ash shown here). There are no sharp glasses below, but if you will not make it on time, you will have to make the tricky part. Jump out of the depression at the other side and turn to face the slope opposite the crevice. Jump on the slope and keep pressing the Jump button along with Action to grab the crevice (as shown in this screenshot). Shimmy to the right until you can pull up. Drop to the other side and head to the far right corner. Getting into the theatre – Drop down where the doorway is to reach a room with golden sofas. A thug is going down the ramp, so take care of him. Go up the ramp and kill another thug from the left. Continue where the two golden sofas are and pull the movable block once to reveal an opening at the back. Return back to the railings and jump over them to reach the room with the black and white tiles. Go to the other side of the room killing one more thug. When you reach the end, a baddie climbs out of the pit. Take care of him. There is an opening beyond, but you cannot reach it. So, do not waste your time by trying to grab its edge. Drop into the pit and locate the movable block on the left. Pull it once, climb on it and pick up the Theatre Key from the back. Climb on the block again and drop down. A thug will emerge from above, so kill him and climb out of the pit. Return back to the room with the black and white tiles and go up the steps on the left. There should be an opening here, but if you did not pull the movable block before and it now blocks your way at the top of the steps, push the other movable block against the railings and jump over them. Pull the first movable block and jump back down. Into the theatre – Follow the passage around to the right and kill the baddie that comes down the stairs at the end. Backtrack and use the Theatre Key to open the glass doors. Go to the either left or right and kill the baddie that comes from the bottom of the theatre. A thug is patrolling in the opening on the right that you can safely kill by standing on the seats (the long ledges). Once you are done, jump to the opening and kill his fellow. Pick up the Uzi Clips (or a pair of Uzis if you do not have them) the thug dropped and use the switch to raise a part of the curtain of the stage. Drop down having your weapons drawn, because a baddie will come from behind the curtains (what a surprise, uh?). Kill him and go behind the curtains. Pull the movable block once, climb on it and then climb into the opening on the left. Drop to the other side and jump over the pit with the sharp glasses at the bottom. Push the button to flood the pit you got the Theatre Key before. You need to return there, so jump over the pit, climb through the opening you came from, pass the theatre and return to the room with the black and white tiles. Say "Hello" to our friend and take care of him. If you are having troubles with this guy, stand at the top of the steps and wait for him there. When he shows up, start shooting, side-jumping to the right and using the wall as a cover. Pick up his Shotgun Shells and go to the end of the room. Jump into the water and climb into the opening. Proceed ahead to end the level.
