Level 7: NEPAL - The Ghalali Key
(If you are looking for Time Trial Tips, see our dedicated section.)
[BUG WARNING - You are advised to save your game before entering the Monastery at the end of the level. A strange bug appears (mostly on the PS2 and XBOX versions) that may make you unable to finish the game.] In the cut scene, Lara reaches Nepal. After she drops on a ledge, she tells Zip that the wreckage should be on the other side. Alister cannot see anything and asks Lara if she is in the right spot. Lara never forgets a face. The Key that restores the Excalibur is the relic that Lara's father gave to her mother in Ghana to replace the pendant she lost there. So, you need to find the plane wreckage and recover the Ghalali Key. [Checkpoint] Jump to grab the ledge and traverse to the left. Be quick (press the Interact button whilst shimming), because the ledge collapses. Pull up on the stone ledge, then climb on the next one. Slide down the slope and jump to grab the stone block ahead. Pull up and jump to grab the ledge with the rocks at the top. Release to grab the narrow ledge below. Traverse around the corner and jump to grab the ledge behind. Quickly shimmy to the right, because the part you grabbed will collapse. Pull up and climb on the stone block. Turn left and jump on the wooden ramp that collapses after a few seconds, so quickly run and jump to grab the pole ahead. Do not swing for long, because it will break. Quickly jump to grab the ledge ahead, then jump to grab the stone block above. [Checkpoint] Pull up and hang from the other side of the block. Drop down and pick up the Bronze Prayer Wheel (1/9). Then climb back up. Jump off the ledge and press Jump in midair to use the Grapple and catch the shimmering bell above. Swing and jump to grab the stalactite. It is ready to break down, so quickly jump to grab the next stalactite that is also ready to collapse. Jump to the next stalactite, then jump to grab the snowy ledge. Traverse around the corner and jump to grab the ledge above. Traverse to right until you see a ledge above you. Jump to grab it, but do not pull up yet. Keep traversing to the right past the rock (as shown in this screenshot) and pull up to get the Silver Prayer Wheel (1/6). Hang from the edge, traverse back and pull up on the ledge you bypassed before. Shoot the icy wall on the right and follow the cave. [Checkpoint] Area with crashed plane - You reach the area where the plane was crashed. Turn right and jump to grab the stone block ahead. Pull up and slide down the slope. Jump at the edge to land on a second slope. Again, jump at the edge to land on the ledge ahead. Turn left and jump on the decrepit ledge. Run and jump to grab the pole ahead. Swing, jump and press Jump again to use the Grapple and catch a part of the plane above. Swing and jump into the cave. Turn around and shoot the icy wall on the right opposite (as shown in this screenshot). Jump there and pick up the Silver Prayer Wheel (2/6). Jump back to the cave and follow it to the end. Area with plane's nose - A helicopter flies above and Lara says that Rutland's men are here. Do not bother with that now. Turn right and jump to grab the wing. Release to grab the lower part and jump to grab the snowy ledge behind you. Carefully, make your way down. [Checkpoint] Crouch beneath the fan and use the Grapple to get the Bronze Prayer Wheel (2/9). Then return back. Go to the other side and drop to the lower ledge. Kill the jaguar from here and drop close to the plane's nose. Before doing anything with it, go to the other side and climb on the icy ledge (as shown here). Use the Grapple to throw the broken part of the plane down in the deep pit and jump to grab the opposite side. Pull up and pick up the Silver Prayer Wheel (3/6). Return back to the plane's nose. As you face it, locate the broken part on the left. Pull it in front of the plane (as shown in this screenshot). Enter and climb on the plane. Do not proceed farther. Turn around and use the Grapple to pull the broken part of the plane and position it inside the plane. [Checkpoint] This will balance the plane and you can proceed inside. The cut scene shows Lara finding the pendant. When she tries to get it, the plane is about to fall. Press the appropriate buttons (as the game shows) to save Lara. When she reaches the ground, she puts the pendant in her pocket. She then uses her Binoculars and sees a Monastery. She says to Zip that there is one more place she would like to visit. [Checkpoint] You just got the Ghalali Key and you now need to revisit the ancient Monastery and reexamine the ancient stone dais. (Just the fragments of the sword cannot do anything.) Slides and decrepit poles - Jump to the snowy slope ahead and when you reach the edge, jump to grab the pole. It is ready to break down, so do not keep on swinging. Jump to land on the slope ahead and when you reach the edge, jump to land on the next slope. Jump at the edge to land on a third slope and whilst sliding down, draw weapons and shoot the icy wall ahead. Jump to the next slope and jump to grab the pole. It is about to fall down, so quickly jump to the ledge ahead. Phew! Go to the left to reach the entrnace of a cave. [Checkpoint] Before entering the cave, turn around to spot the Bronze Prayer Wheel (3/9) in the alcove. Use the Grapple to get it. (Note: You can take the Prayer Wheel before entering cave and triggering the Checkpoint. That way, you will not accidentally miss it if you fail in the next part and the Checkpoint loads.) Cave with multiple jumps and grabs - Enter the cave. When you reach the deep pit, jump to grab the ledge on the opposite side. Pull up and turn right. Jump to grab the pole, swing and jump to grab the narrow ledge ahead. Traverse to the left and jump to grab the next ledge, which is about to fall down. Quickly shimmy to the left and release to grab the ledge below. Jump to grab the pole behind, swing and jump to grab the stalactite. Jump to grab the next one and make a turn to spot the Bronze Prayer Wheel (4/9) in the alcove (as shown here). You will get it in just a bit, so jump to the platform on the right. It is about to fall down, so quickly run and jump to grab the ledge ahead. Traverse to the right and pull up. Turn around and use the Grapple to get the Prayer Wheel you left behind. (Alternative way of getting the last Prayer Wheel: From the second stalactite, jump to the platform and quickly move to the center. That way, you can balance on it, turn around and use the Grapple to get the Wheel. Then turn around again and jump to the next ledge. In case you do not balance, do not panic. The platform will start bending slowly, so you have time to get the Wheel and leave. Thanks to Bruce for the suggestion.) Hang from the edge on the other side and traverse to the left (as shown in this screenshot). Release to grab the ledge below and, again, treverse to the left. Release to grab the two ledges below and shimmy to the left. Pull up and pick up the Gold Prayer Wheel (1/1)*. Make your way back to the ledge from where you used the Grapple and got the last Bronze Prayer Wheel. Grab the narrow ledge on the right (as you return back from the Gold Prayer Wheel) and shimmy to the other side. Jump to grab the ledge on the right, then the vertical pole behind you; climb to the top. Jump to grab the narrow ledge on the right and shimmy to the end. Jump to grab the opposite ledge, quickly traverse to the right before it collapses and jump to grab the ledge above. Pull up. [*Note about the Gold Prayer Wheel: If you do not understand the above description about the Gold Prayer Wheel, here is another one: After passing the two stalactites and the platform that collapses, you grab a ledge and traverse to the right in order to pull up on a safe ledge (as shown in this screenshot). From this ledge, you would normally grab a narrow ledge on the left. Instead of doing that, drop and hang from the other side (as shown in this screenshot) and traverse to the left.] Area with pool and snow banks - Follow the passage to an area with a pool and snow banks. [Checkpoint] There are five guards here and three of them will shoot from the ground. Kill them all and be careful of the barrels that explode. Pick up the items you want and go around to the left (if the entrance is to your back) to get a Bronze Prayer Wheel (5/9). If you fall into the water, your health bar will start decreasing, so avoid it. Climb on the lowest snow bank and shoot the icy wall opposite the building that one of the guards was shooting from (as shown in this screenshot). Jump to grab the ledge of the alcove and pull up to get the Silver Prayer Wheel (4/6). Climb on the snow bank in the middle of the area and jump to the next one. Jump to the higher ledge and pick up the Bronze Prayer Wheel (6/9). Make a double jump to use the Grapple and catch the shimmering bell above. Swing and jump to the opposite side. Climb on the upper ledge and grab the wire to slide to the other side of the area. Pool will icy ledges - Slide down the slope and enter the cave. [Checkpoint] Keep an eye on the left to spot the Bronze Prayer Wheel (7/9) in the alcove. After getting it, go to the end of the cave to reach a pool with icy ledges. Jump on the first two and shoot the the icy ledge above to throw it down. This will help you make it across. So, jump on it, then to the next icy ledge. Finally, jump to grab the opening. Pull up. Area with pool and floating icy ledges - You reach a pool with floating icy ledges. They move to the right, but you have to go to the left, jumping on them. There is a flat ledge on the other side and a bit to the left, where you can take a breath. When you reach that, you will be able to spot the Silver Prayer Wheel (5/6) on the opposite side. Go there and get it. Then use the floating ledges to reach the cave on the other side. Inside the Monastery - This is the entrance of the ancient Monastery. Go through the door and up the steps with your weapons drawn. [Checkpoint] Shoot in the air to awake a jaguar that attacks from the top. Shoot it until it drops dead. Then enter the Monastery. Go down the right hand stairs and when you reach the platform at the bottom, make a U turn to the right. Shoot the decrepit part of the wall (as shown here) and jump in the alcove to get the Silver Prayer Wheel (6/6). [IMPORTANT WARNING - As you explore around the area after getting the Prayer Wheel, you will probably notice the frozen wooden ledges in the middle of the room. Although they seem ready to collapse, for now you can walk on them without problem. If you take a look beneath the ledges, you will spot a small ball in the air (as shown in this screenshot). DO NOT SHOOT IT! If you do so, the nearby ledge will collapse. You will need this ledge later in order to finish the level.] Make your way up close to the entrance. Approach the edge, where there are no railings. Take a look above to spot the shimmering hanging bells. There are three of them and you need to use the Grapple and catch each one until you reach the opposite side. When you do that, kill the jaguar. Lara says that the doors were not close the other time she was here, so you need to find a way and gain access to the secret room beneath Buddha. Before doing anything, go up both stair cases (one on each side) to get the two Bronze Prayer Wheels (8/9 & 9/9). The scale puzzle - There is a gold pressure plate at the top of the building and only the gold box can do the job (the gold box is the left one as you face the building, which is alone). This means that you have to take it up using the ledges that look like a scale. If you jump on one of the ledges, it will lower, and the other will go up. Facing the ledges, go to the right first. Jump on it to lower it and use the Grapple to pull the small box on the ledge. Climb on the building and step on the other (left) ledge. It will lower, so use the Grapple to pull the gold box on the ledge. Go to the first ledge and pull the big box on it. The other ledge with the gold box will remain at the top, so climb on the building and use the Grapple to pull the gold box (do not step on the ledge, because it will lower). Position the box on the plate to open the door below. Make sure you place it corretly, so that it perfectly fits, or the door will not open. Drop down and go through it. The door will close behind you, so go down the steps. [Checkpoint] In the cut scene, Lara approaches the stone in the middle of the room. Zip asks her how she knew it would be there and Lara wants a minute to check something. She puts the pieces of the sword together and takes the Ghalali Key out of her pocket. She approaches it to the sword, which becomes one piece. "Excalibur reforged", Lara says. Zip congratulates her. Now that you examined the stone dais and reforged the Excalibur, you have to leave the Monastery and return back to Bolivia. Go behind the stairs [Checkpoint] and use the sword to break the door. Do not stick to the door. Just stay away from it and use the sword. In the cut scene, we hear Zip enjoying it and Lara says that we now know how young Arthur became king. [BUG WARNING - After the brief cut scene, do NOT jump on the stone ledge in the back right corner (see this screenshot to get oriented). A part of it collapses, but another one remains intact. If you make the mistake and jump there, you may continue to the side of the room and end the level by hanging from the last ledge (where the cut scene that triggers the end of the level plays). But if you fall down and die, the last checkpoint (just before using the sword to break the door) may generate the bug (sometimes the checkpoint remains clean), where the cut scene that triggers the end of the level does not play, making you unable to finish the level. This bug usually appears on the console versions. On the PC version, the cut scene plays, but if you encounter a bug, you can download a saved game.] After the cut scene, the floor collapses. Run to the left and jump to the decrepit ledge. Immediately jump to grab the next ledge on the right. Pull up, turn right and jump to the next decrepit ledge. Do not stop at all!! Run and jump to the next ledge and quickly jump to the ledge beneath the entrance. [Note about the ledges: If one of the ledges is not there (because either you shot the ball as desribed in the IMPORTANT WARNING above or there is a fault in the game), you can take an alternative route (see this page). The console players may activate the above bug, but they can give it a try.] When Lara is safe, Alister asks her in the cut scene if there are more sightseeings or she has finished. Lara says she is going back to Bolivia and then she will see.
